Man starts free lawn mowing service: 'My way of making a difference is with a lawnmower'

Making a difference in one's community can take a variety of forms, even if means simply mowing a elderly person's lawn for free.

That is the message of one Alabama man who has started a program for local youths to encourage them to give back. "My Sprinkler System Installation Mckinney mission is to encourage kids to get out there and give back to their community," Rodney Smith Jr., 27, told ABC News. "I tell people all the time, if they are able, they can make a difference, and my way of making a difference is with a lawnmower."

The Bermuda native, who currently lives in Huntsville, Alabama, started the Raising Men Lawn Care Services last year, and since then the group has mowed around a thousand lawns, for free, for people in their community.

"We cut lawns for free for the elderly, disabled, veterans, a nd single moms," Smith said.

Smith said the idea originally came to him in 2015.

"I was driving from school and I saw an elderly man cutting grass and it looked like he was struggling," he said. "So I decided to help him."

The man's reaction affected Smith so deeply that he was inspired to continue his work throughout the summer of 2015.

The following year he decided to recruit some local youths to help, and the Raising Men Lawn Care Services was born.

Smith said he los t count of how many lawns they have mowed for free, but he estimated the number at more than 1,000.

Smith's group currently has 60 children participating in the Huntsville chapter, with another six chapters operating across the state. His goal is to have a chapter in all 50 states.

In addition to providing lawn services to those in need, Smith said that a big part of his mission is to "mentor http://www.rainbird.com/ young men, and even young girls, from ages seven to 17 about the importance of giving back to the community."

Raising Men Lawn Care Service mows lawns for free for elderly and disabled people as well as veterans and single moms.

This year, Smith launched the 50 Yard Challenge, which sets a goal for children worldwide to cut the grass on 50 lawns for free for people in their community who are elderly, disabled, veterans or single moms.

The challenge rewards youths with colored t-shirts each time t hey reach the milestone 10, 20, 30, 40 and then finally 50 lawns. When a young person mows 50 lawns for free, they get a visit from Smith and the founding Raising Men Lawn Care Services team, as well as a brand new lawnmower to continue their work.

Smith said so far he has heard from dozens of children nationwide that are taking part in the challenge, and at least two children in England who are participating.

The organization never charges for lawn mowing services and operates on donations for gasoline and other expenses, according to Smith. In addition, the lawnmower engine makers Briggs and Stratton contribute lawnmowers, weed eaters and other equipment to the group.

Smith said the response has been overwhelming from both the youth who participate in the program, and those who receive the free lawn services.

"For a lot of the elderly, they just can't believe it, they are so grateful," Smith said. "We have elderly people who just cry."

"The kids are so excited, they call and say 'save my spot this weekend, please?'" he said.

Home builders beating back fire sprinkler laws

HARTFORD, Conn. - Nearly three dozen states have rejected the idea of requiring sprinkler systems in homes by enacting legislation or rules that prohibit mandatory installation.

Home builders, still reeling from the recession, say requiring sprinklers would add to their costs. They have found allies in state legislatures and rule-making bodies that have turned aside arguments by fire safety officials that requiring Sprinkler System Installation sprinklers in homes save lives.

The National Association of Home Builders has not taken a position on state action banning mandatory fire sprinklers in homes, said program manager Steve Orlowski, but the group has argued that installing residential sprinklers should be up to homeowners.

Either through legislation or code, 34 states have prohibited mandatory residential fire sprinklers, Orlowski said. Only two states -- California and Maryland -- have adopted codes r equiring installation of home sprinklers, he said.

In other states, sprinkler legislation died or is pending until next year, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Connecticut, for example, is deferring action until next year. A measure requiring automatic fire extinguishing systems in one- and two-family homes failed to make it to a vote in the Public Safety and Security Committee.

Sen. Anthony Guglielmo, the committee's ranking Republican senator, said legislators did not have enough information about the cost to buil ders and municipalities that would enforce the law. Legislators will take up the issue next year only after hearing the recommendations of officials and others brought together by the state Department of Public Safety, he said.

The International Code Council, an organization of building inspectors, fire officials and others who set building standards, recommended in 2009 that states and municipalities adopt codes requiring sprinkler systems in homes and townhouses less than three stories high. The regulations took effect Jan. 1.

The National Fire Protection Association has said sprinklers will particularly help young children, the elderly and the disabled by giving them time to escape burning homes.

Opponents of requiring sprinklers cite their cost -- and subsequent impact on home prices -- and voters ' dissatisfaction with government mandates.

In Missouri, lawmakers extended for eight years rules that require builders to offer sprinklers but do not mandate them.

"Our main concern, in this housing market, is that the requirement for mandatory fire sprinklers could cost $7,000 to $15,000 per home," said Missouri state Sprinkler System Installation Sen. Eric Schmitt, Republican chairman of the Jobs, Economic Development and Local Government Committee. "In this market, it's very difficult to justify."

In New Hampshire, Gov. John Lynch tried to vetoed legislation that prohibited local planning boards from requiring sprinkler systems http://landscapearizona.com/landscape_design-htm/ in homes as a condition of approval for local permits. The decision about whether to require fire sprinklers should remain a local one, Lynch said.

Legislato rs overrode the veto.

Sen. John S. Barnes, Republican chairman of the Public Municipal Affairs Committee, said the override vote was not easy because he typically favors local control. But he does not believe any government body should be ordering homeowners to install fire sprinklers.

"If I buy or build a house, I think I should decide whether I put in a sprinkler system," he said.

John A. Viniello, president of the National Fire Sprinkler Association, said the process by which codes are approved is flawed. Codes regulating wiring, construction and other facets of home construction are informed by expert advice from industry and others, he said.

But when legislatures have a role in the process, codes too often are modified or scuttled, he said.

"Once the politicians get involved, it's over," he said.

How Does Your Home's Indoor Environment Affect Wood Flooring?

When you feel cold inside your home, you turn up the heat. If you have air conditioning, you turn it on when you feel hot. Did you ever think about how the living conditions inside your home affect your wood flooring? Most people don't, but it is important. Here's why:

While wood floors are made from "dead" trees, the flooring reacts to temperature and humidity changes inside your home as if it were alive. Your skin reacts to low humidity. So does wood flooring. High humidity and high temperatures affect your skin. These conditions also affect your wood floors. What is comfortable for you is also ideal for your wood floors.

It doesn't matter if your wood floors are solid wood, engineered wood, or laminate. It doesn't matter if the wood is oak, mahogany, or bamboo. It doesn't matter if the wood is nailed down, glued down, or floating. Regardless of the installation method, all wood flooring absorbs or loses moisture as conditions change slowly or rapidly inside your hom e.

Every wood flooring manufacturer only allows their products to be installed indoors, with a stable, maintained environment. This means that, in order for the wood flooring to perform as designed, the temperature and humidity conditions inside of your home must be kept continuously within a certain range. This range varies slightly depending on the manufacturer and type of wood flooring. Generally, the required range is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbQK4Bl3s_I between 60-80 degrees with a relative humidity range of 35 percent to 55 percent. Wood floors don't like sudden indoor changes. So what happens if you don't maintain the temperature and humidity within these requirements?

As I said, wood shrinks and grows with the weather. If a wood floor is installed in a home that sees wide fluctuations in temperature and humidity, it reacts accordingly. When the humidity jumps, the floor will swell and expand. Wood floors are installed with gaps around the edges (covered with baseboards) to allow for some expansion. The gap along each wall is usually equal to the thickness of a board. But if the humidity really jumps quickly, the floor can expand beyond these expansion gaps. Just think about it. Let's say the boards are each 5" wide and your room is 15' across. So you have 36 boards across https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbQK4Bl3s_I the room. If each board swells 1/16", the entire floor grows more than two inches! The gap on each side of the room is probably 1/2" or less. That means a total planned expansion of 1" in each direction. If your floor gains an inch beyond the existing gaps, where does that extra wood go? Up! You wind up with a buckled floor. It's like walking on a trampoline. So what, you say. Once the humidity drops the floor should shrink back to its original size. Not so fast. It may shrink back, all right. But the edges of

each board are now crushed. They are permanently damaged. Once the floor shrinks,

you may see gaps between the boards.

And what happens when the humidity drops quickly? The floor shrinks! You may see gaps suddenly appear along the sides or ends of the boards. The boards themselves may split or crack in the centers or at the ends, or both. This damage is also permanent. Rising humidity will not remove the splits, although some gaps may disappea r.

To add insult to injury, none of this damage is covered by the flooring warranty. It is your responsibility to make sure you have a stable environment in your home.

When you bought your wood flooring, did anyone ask you if your home has air conditioning? A humidifier? A dehumidifier? All of these devices are needed to keep your home within the required temperature/humidity ranges as stated in your warranty. Does every wood floor fail because the inside temperature/humidity levels greatly fluctuate? No. Do wide temperature/humidity swings greatly increase the odds of flooring failure? Yes. If your wood floor self-destructs because of a rapidly changing indoor environment the blame, unfortunately, falls on the homeowner.

If you are a "snowbird" and leave your home unoccupied for weeks at a time, don't turn the heat down low. You could come home to unhappy wood floors. If you go away on a long summer vacation, leave the A/C on. Otherwise, the i nside of your home could resemble a swamp. That is no "vacation" for your wood floors.

Remember, when your skin feels good inside your home, your wood flooring feels good, too!

How to prepare your lawn for spring

When the winter season ends, you will probably want to spend more time outside, appreciating the warm weather and the simple pleasures of a nicely kept lawn. Here are a few steps you can take toward creating and maintaining a healthy and gorgeous lawn.

Remove debris

Rake away the debris from the fall and winter months, including leaves and sticks. This will give you a fresh start for the spring. If you have leftover rubbish on the lawn, this can get in the way of mowing, watering, planting seed and so on. Raking has the added benefit of loosening the surface of the soil, encouraging healthy airflow.

Chris Lemcke, national technical director of Weed Man (a lawn care company), advises raking up last year's leaves and matted grass that were hiding under last fall's leaves and sticks left in the yard. This can keep the thatch level at half an inch or less. It will also allow you to care for the lawn properly.

Apply more grass seed

Look for areas with we ak grass growth or dead grass. Use a strong rake to open the surface. Mix the grass seed with new, healthy soil. Then spread this soil/grass seed mixture over the surface. Don't forget to regularly water this area to foster hearty and fast grass growth.

Mulch

Mulch is a protective covering that you can apply to soil to lock in moisture. "Mulching with a depth of 2 to 4 inches around the bases of trees, shrubs and in flower beds will retain water and keep plants warm," says Lemcke.

Water deeply

Many homeowners water their lawns Sprinklers often -- but with little water. However, it's better to water only when your lawn needs it with a lot of water.

If you water deep and sparingly, you will train the grass roots to dig deeper into the soil. Whereas, if you water lightly and often, you will train the roots to stay near the surface, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Snow m old

Look for snow mold. This condition is caused when the grass doesn't receive enough oxygen because it's been covered in snow. Snow mold reveals itself when the snow melts.

If you rake Sprinklers your lawn before the arrival of snow, this can reduce your risk of snow-mold. Some people, with a history of snow mold, try to avoid this condition by mowing the lawn well into the autumn and spreading snow evenly across the lawn during winter. The latter, however, is deemed excessive by many people.

Mow high

Mow your lawn with a sharp blade. You should also mow often because grass doesn't adjust as well to infrequent mowing. If you keep your grass a bit on the longer side, it will grow thicker and healthier, with a better-established root system.

Better roots help your grass survive insects or drought. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, many turf grass species shoul d be kept between 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches.

Gardening :: How To Care For Perennials In Your Garden

Perennials have long been one of the most popular classifications of flowering plant, and this is likely to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjreVlmEbis continue for some time. There are many advantages to using perennials in the garden, not the least of which is their ability to regenerate year after year. The ability to plant once, and enjoy season after season of beautiful flowers, is one of the things that make perennials so popular with beginning and experienced gardeners alike.

Another great thing about perennials is that they are usually very easy plants to care for and to work with. Most perennials have needs that are quite undemanding, requiring little more than good soil, sufficient water and adequate sunlight. Even so, perennials also have their own issues, and one of the biggest issues is that perennials, due to their nature, are more prone to insect infestation and disease infection than are annuals, whi ch have a much shorter life span. The very fact that perennials remain in the ground season after season means that infection can gain a foothold, even in the off season.

The best way to combat infection is to stop it from starting in the first place, and one of the best ways to accomplish that goal is to buy only the healthiest most vibrant plants. It is important to pay careful attention to the plants you buy at your local nursery, and to reject an y that show signs of damage, disease or insect infestation. That is because healthy plants are better able to withstand any pathogens that may exist in the soil. A healthy plant will be able to withstand and fight off an infection that would kill a weaker one.

In addition, many perennials have been bred http://londongardens.net/ to be resistant to common diseases and pest infestations, so if these disease resistant varieties are available it is a good idea to seek them out. Perennial growers have spent many years using selective breeding to choose those plants that are best able to withstand commonly seen garden problems.

After the plants are in the ground, it is a good idea to check them often for any signs of problems. The best time to examine your plants is often when you are weeding the plants or watering them. This is a great time to look at the plants for any problems. Note any plants with wilted leaves, holes in the leaves, spots on the leaves or flowers, wounds on the stems or other possible problems. If you notice any problems, be sure to diagnose it accurately, using either a guide book or the eye of a more experienced gardener. Diagnosing the problem accurately is the first step toward curing it.

How you water perennials can have a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjreVlmEbis big impact on their health. Overhead watering encourages water spots to remain on leaves, and these wet spots can be conduits that allow infection to spread from one plant to another. It is best to water deeply, using either drip irrigation or a soaker hose. Not only will this avoid standing water on the flowers and leaves, but it will also allow much needed water to reach the roots.

Of course, proper care for perennials does not end when the growing season is over. It is important to care for these plants the right way after they have finishe d blooming. It is important to trim and prune is variety of perennial according to the recommendations for the species. Some perennials need to be radically trimmed back, while other varieties should be trimmed only lightly or not at all. It is important to pay attention to the needs of each variety in your garden.
